Texas Car Voucher Program - It's finally here!
If you need a new car, the state of Texas may have money for you.
A couple of months ago we first told you about a new program designed to get older cars off the road and cut down on pollution.
Now the program is up and running and it will help you put up to $3,500 toward the purchase of a new or used car.

PLEASE tell us if this will be an ongoing project or if it is just a window of opportunity, and if so, how long this program is expected to last.

It’s GREAT that the State is giving those $3K vouchers to get the older cars off the road.
Unfortunately, the people who need that money most, are being put in a bind, because of the requirements the State is demanding, to qualify for the Voucher.
That being:
A very low income person (like me) would be glad to turn his old wreck in, but the state requires that the car which is purchased, is only a few years old.
IF someone doesn’t have a LOT of money to put with that $3K, he can’t get enough money together, to buy one, unless he goes into debt, and won’t if he’s like me, and can’t pay a Creditor back. See!?
Bait but can’t switch !

People do not have old cars because they want to , they have them because they are paid off and it is not a burden on their shoulders. Besides 3000 dollars, thats like a minimum down payment and the monthly payments alone will either put you furthur into dept or cause you to live off of ramein and macarony.
I wish they would make monthly payments lower, so people actually could take advantage of the vousher money, enjoy their new rides and benefit the environment. That's the whole purpose of it, I just wish that people who came up with this idea and delarships would consider the monthly payments and the reason behind owening an old car.

This car voucher program is a God-send. I have a '90 Cadillac which I inherited. I had no plans to ever sell it, but it needs about $4,000 worth of work done on it. If my deceased relative who owned this car were alive, she would advise me to utilize this program to get a new/nice/used car. I have already decided to purchase a car for $11,000. I'll really have to negotiate the number of months it will be financed so that my note is below $300 per month. I know God answers prayers. I have supernatural favor. Praise the Lord. Thank you Jesus for interceding for me. THINGS ARE GREAT IN 2008.

I have a 1998 Chevy Luminia, It is updated with all the maintance wise. Needs air only. I have two boys and they sit way to close to each other, if you know what I mean , I think we all need our own row to sit in. We jsut bought our 1st new house, (a little late in life) now we can't afford a new car... Please help. I was thinking about a Hyundia Santa Fe. We wouldn't each have out own row, but I think its a pretty reasonable $ amount for a new one.
Is there any way I would qualify for a voucher?

we bought a 1994 grand prix from WA about three years ago and drove it only for emergencies unregistered because it was expensive and did not yet have a bill of sale. We've lived in north texas for three years, can we still qualify for the voucher even though our car has only been legally registered for less than six months.
Posted by: brenda | February 07, 2008 at 07:42 AM
does anybody know how long it takes to get the voucher after mailing in the information?

I would love to get a new car. I have a 96 Dodge Avenger that I know is about ready to quit on me but being 20yrs trying to go to school a car note just isn't what I need. I mean its a really good program but $3k isn't alot when you look at the bigger picture of the $500/mo car not and $300/mo insurance. That nearly all my monthly income. I'll never get ahead in life. It's a good program but the government needs to sit down and think about why people don't have new cars to began with.

I am an 12th grade high school student and it is nice that the state is doing this but this only will help an small amount of pepole because even with the 3,500 dallars you still have to add to it and even then you will have a car note every month dats the reason we are driving to old cars because they are paid for but if we all had the money sure we would run and get an new car I know I would I dont make the requirements for the 3,500 because I have an 01 doge neon its only seven years old but its falling apart on me but if I did make the requirements it still would not help me.

I am very sad that I can't take advantage of this wonderful gift the government wants to give to people that have old cars. I have a 1987 Ford Crown Victoria and it is a great car because an older couple had it before me and hardly drove it. The car still passes the emission test but it sucks a lot of gas. I am a college student with 2 kids to take care of and only get child support. I have an old car because I can't afford a newer car with all the car payments and higher insurance. I wish I could help the environment but I guess the governtment didn't understand why people have old cars - because we can't afford new ones. Thanks for trying to help, and at least people that make 20,000 a year and up can benefit from this program.

While the intentions are honorable, the policy is questionable.
It would seem to me that a subsidy to REPAIR the vehicle might be a better idea than just outright giving $3500 to dealerships. All you're basically doing is making the owners of the dealerships of the echelon of Houston richer. When was the last time you you've seen a sub-$5000 vehicle in a dealership that they were willing to finance? Or finance with manageable terms at all?
Let's face it, if an individual would rather take the money than try to repair the vehicle, then either they can't afford to, or the vehicle is beyond repair. Judging from the majority of the posts in this forum, it seems to be the former more than the latter.
Does anyone want to explain how a $300 car payment (and full cover insurance. Lets not forget that...) for the next three to five years seems like a good idea?
I hate to opine and rain on the parade, but it just seems to me that it was definitely not thought out as well as it should have.
Posted by: Ivan | May 29, 2008 at 04:15 PM
Forgot to add: Just because it's a "new car", it doesn't mean that it won't need constant maintenance. Worse yet, what if it's a lemon?
Meanwhile, whether the vehicle is running or not, you still have the monthly payment that must be paid IF you don't want the repo man taking it away, or worse yet, bad credit.
Posted by: Ivan | May 29, 2008 at 04:22 PM
This is truly awful, IMO. I, too, am sorry to rain on so many people's parades, but the idea that the government will help you buy a "new" car is disgusting to me. Whatever happened to having personal freedom, instead of sucking at the tit of the government for everything? I drive a '95 Mazda MX-6. While it isn't in the greatest shape, I love it. It's PAID for!
Anyone who is willing to go into debt while accepting a government hand-out really needs to re-think their priorities. Ask yourself if you REALLY need a "new" car that bad. And if you do, here's an idea. Take the money you would spend on a car payment, and save it in a high-yield money market account (or an e-savings account) for about a year, and you'll probably be able to go pay cash for a used vehicle that's in decent shape and will have already taken the major hit in depreciation. Don't rely on a taxpayer supported handout (you can bet that Texas probably received some federal funding for this program...). Some of us out here would rather have our tax money back than supply you with "free" vehicles that really aren't free.
Rant over!
