    Protest your Property Appraisal

Today on Eyewitness News at 4 we showed you the Harris County zip codes facing the largest increases in appraised values.  If you live in Northwest Harris County, Kingwood, Clear Lake, inside the Loop or in the Spring Branch area, your values could be going up by 10 to 26%.

Take a look at the zip code break down here.

You still have time to file a protest and sign up to have the case settled on line.  You can do that right now by checking out the Harris County Appraisal District's web site here.

The deadline to file a protest is June 2nd.

Just wondering who to talk to or complain to about a recent incident with my property tax protest. My house was built on a lot bought by the builder who split the lot into 3 to build 3 equal sized lots with townhomes. As of 2006, HCAD valued the entire lot as 112,500. I protested my $52,000 lot appraisal stating I felt it should only be $37,000 as did my two neighbors(one third of 112,000). One neighbor hired O'Connor and Associates and got his appraisal to be $31,000. I represented myself and mine was $37,000(for the same sized lot, 2 houses down). My third neighbor's was $57,000. How is this possible? Does HCAD give O'Connor and Associates a better deal? Are regular consumers forced to hire an attorney to get the best deal? How can this even be legal????

Any hints on viable points for protesting our property appraisal? Since the only homes in our small, older subbdivision that have sold in the past year were in early 2007, sales comps are out of the question. Using unequal appraisal also seems out of the question as most area homes have jumped in 'market value' at least 10-20%, though 'appraised values' are capped at 10%. Any other suggestions?

I CAN'T SEE THE ZIP CODES! IS THERE SOMEWHERE ELSE I CAN GO TO LOOK THIS UP?
